Keeping It Slick: The Why and How of Wire Rope Lubrication

Wire ropes rely on lubrication to perform properly and last. Lubrication reduces friction between the internal wires and strands as they move, preventing wear from the inside out. Lubrication also forms a protective barrier against moisture, helping to stop corrosion.

Just as importantly, it keeps the rope flexible and running smoothly under load, extending its service life and improving overall safety.

Wire ropes are lubricated in a few different ways, depending on the application and condition of the rope, but the goal is always to get lubricant into the rope, not just on the surface.

The most common lubrication methods are:

  • Manual application – Brushing, spraying, or dripping lubricant onto the rope as it moves. Simple, but not always effective at reaching the core.
  • Drip or bath systems – The rope passes through a lubricator that continuously applies product during operation.
  • Pressure lubrication (best practice) – A machine clamps around the rope and forces lubricant under pressure into the strands. This pushes out old grease and contaminants while fully penetrating to the core.

* Before lubricating, the rope is often cleaned first to remove dirt and old buildup otherwise the new lubricant can’t properly penetrate.

Essentially, the more effectively the lubricant reaches the inside of the rope, the better it protects against wear and corrosion.
