How Do You Install a Haul Rope on Extremely Long Systems?

When you look at a gondola, tramway, or ropeway stretching miles across rugged terrain, it’s easy to forget the enormous effort it takes to install the haul rope - the lifeline of the system.
Here’s how it’s done on very long lines:

  • Pilot Line First - A lightweight rope is carried along the route (often by helicopter) and threaded over every tower.
  • Step-by-Step Pulling - That line pulls in a heavier “messenger rope,” which then pulls in the actual haul rope from its massive reel.
  • Controlled Spooling - Specialized equipment manages rope tension to prevent damage while it’s fed over towers and through terminals.
  • Endless Splice - Skilled rope splicers spend days weaving the rope ends together, strand by strand, to create a seamless loop.
  • Final Tensioning - Counterweights or hydraulic systems set the rope at the perfect tension, followed by careful inspection and slow-speed running.

The result? A continuous steel rope that can stretch for kilometers, carrying passengers or materials smoothly and safely across mountains, valleys, and rivers.

It’s one of the most complex and fascinating parts of ropeway construction.
