What Makes a Chairlift Work?

What Makes a Chairlift Work?

Chairlifts may look simple from the slopes, but behind the scenes they’re an incredible blend of engineering, safety, and design. Here are the key parts that keep riders moving uphill:

  • Terminals (Top & Bottom) – One drives the rope with powerful motors, the other turns it back around. Inside, tensioning systems (hydraulic or counterweight) keep the rope just right.
  • Haul Rope – A continuous steel cable, spliced into an endless loop, that carries every chair.
  • Towers & Sheaves – Towers support the line, while rollers (sheaves) guide the rope smoothly over each span.
  • Carriers (Chairs) – The passenger seats, attached to the rope with either fixed or detachable grips. Detachable chairs slow down in stations for safer, easier loading and unloading.
  • Safety Systems – From emergency brakes to rope sensors and evacuation equipment, every lift is built with multiple layers of protection.

It all works together so that riders can enjoy a safe, smooth trip to the top.

Next time you sit back on a chairlift, you’ll know a little more about the engineering beneath the ride.
